Situational Analysis for Lane Keeping Assistance

Let's do a situational analysis for the lane keeping assistance function. We'll focus on the driver misusing the item. Because the lane keeping assistance function takes control of the vehicle, we'll imagine that a driver takes both hands off of the steering wheel and treats the vehicle as if it were autonomous (in fact, you can find youtube videos of people misusing their lane keeping assistance like this); however, the lane keeping assistance function was not designed to drive the vehicle with full autonomy.

Using the guide words, the situation will be "Normal driving on country roads during normal conditions with high speed (the driver is misusing the lane keeping assistance function as an autonomous function)".

We will use this driving situation throughout the lesson for the lane keeping assistance function.

Situational Analysis

Why do we perform a situational analysis?

SOLUTION:
  • We want to consider various hypothetical driving situations in hopes of preventing accidents.
  • We need to consider malfunctions within the context in which they happen.
  • The risk associated with a malfunction will depend on the situation.
  • Without a proper situational analysis, we might end up missing important causes of accidents.

Please note that SAE J2980 provides extensive examples and further recommendations on how to perform hazard and risk assessment.
